CAMC Oracle Cerner OB-GYN clinic optimization

Transitioning a newly acquired OB-GYN clinic to Cerner's EHR

THE SITUATION

Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) engaged Hit That Noggin to transition a newly acquired OB-GYN clinic to CAMC’s Cerner Electronic Health Record. CAMC’s existing OB-GYN clinics were using outdated, generic Cerner ambulatory content with little integration between nursing documentation, MPages, and provider documentation.

“Prior to the new build, we did not have anything that was Obstetrics and Gynecology specific. This led to many of the physicians having to retrofit the previous build of Cerner in time-consuming processes.”

“One of the most difficult clinics was our OB clinic. We did not have a current build for this department and were required in most cases to start from scratch with workflow. The team did an amazing job helping us work through the process and develop an efficient workflow for the providers.”

the solution

project timeline: 5 months

Hit That Noggin implemented an integrated MPage and documentation design that accommodated workflows across the clinics, aligned with Cerner Model Content recommendations, and adhered to CAMC policies and procedures.

our approach

We began the project with a thorough gap analysis between CAMC’s existing OB-GYN content and Cerner Model Content recommendations. During weekly meetings with subject matter experts, we discussed current state workflows, troubleshot problematic build, and collaboratively developed future state workflows. The optimized build incorporated both Cerner Model Content and client-specific requirements in new ambulatory OB-GYN intake documentation, workflow MPages, and Dynamic Documentation templates.

“I felt the approach for the transition was handled in a way that allowed for adequate input for all key end users. I felt very much like I had a voice in all changes throughout the entire build and design process. My advice to others working with this team is to go all in. Share any and every idea, concern, and frustration. This team is exceptional and if there is a way, they will find it.”

“The team did a great job of understanding customer needs and translating them into a finished product. You want to find a team that takes the time to listen and understand the needs of the customer. This team did that and much more.”

OUTCOMES

During two weeks of go-live support, we systematically troubleshot and resolved issues real-time. Post support, we held multiple knowledge transfer and hands-on training sessions for CAMC’s system analysts to ensure their confidence in maintaining the new configuration. HTN:

  • Transitioned CAMC’s configuration from a generic ambulatory to an integrated OB-GYN specific nurse documentation, provider documentation, and workflow MPage design.
  • Improved quality and specificity of nurse and provider documentation.
  • Streamlined clinical processes with Workflow MPages and incorporated Cerner Model components that follow American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (ACOG) standards.
  • Aligned CAMC’s ambulatory OB-GYN with the latest Cerner Model Content recommendations while accommodating client-requested localizations.

“I greatly enjoyed the team's approach to the work. The team was very easy to communicate with and to reach at any and all hours. As a technology enthusiast and a member of the millennial generation, it was extremely refreshing to work with a team that could work at the same speed as me. Note writing and Cerner flow is much improved. I would provide my highest recomm

“Every member of the team was exceptional. Everyone exceeded my expectations and I truly felt like I had their support from the very beginning. It was a wonderful experience.”
